Did you know that fires caused by cigarettes cause close to 1,000 deaths and 3,000 injuries each year in the United States?  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cigarettes are the nation’s largest cause of fire deaths.  In our line of work, we see a lot of devastation caused by fires, but those caused by cigarettes are heartbreaking because they are largely preventable!

While it is never encouraged to smoke in the home, especially if there are children living there, we understand that some people are not ready to kick the habit or take their smoke breaks outside.  If you are a smoker and do smoke in your home, we urge you to take precautions so that you and your family do not become a statistic.

Far too often, we see homes destroyed by fires.  Whether it is caused by Mother Nature, faulty wiring, faulty appliances or cigarettes or lighters, a home fire is traumatic.  Knowing that the trauma could have been prevented is even more so.

For smokers not ready to kick the habit, it is important to follow these simple precautions to prevent a fire at home:

  • Put it out, right out! Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished.  You could use a glass jar with a lid to put your snuffed cigarettes in.
  • Make sure you have properly installed smoke alarms and test them weekly.  A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 911.
  • Never smoke in bed. Take care when you’re tired. It’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set flame to your furniture.
  • Never leave lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended – they can easily tip over as they burn down. Many items in your home are highly flammable and the fire can spread quickly.
  • Use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn.
  • Never leave lighters unattended, especially in a home with children.
