Is black mold Dangerous?
We often get asked this question: What is good mold versus bad mold? Mold is a necessary part of our environment and that includes the fact that you will always have some level of mold in your home. What you don’t want is elevated levels of mold in your home. By keeping humidity levels below 50% and properly cleaning up water damage should help keep mold levels in check. Repair small water leaks immediately as even the smallest leak can lead to a lot of mold growth. Mold comes in a variety of colors but if you see mold growth in your home and if its an area larger than 10sf, it is recommended that you call a professional mold remediation company. If you or a family member think you are having health issues due to mold, it is recommended that you contact your doctor and or hire a mold company to perform mold testing in your home to find out if you have elevated levels of mold. Always trust your nose when it comes to detecting mold, if there is a musty odor present you may have a mold problem.
Another misconception is that the staining from black mold can be completely removed from an affected material. Many times the staining from any color of mold cannot be completely removed and just because the staining is still there does not mean that the more spores are still there. The safest way to know if mold is still on a surface is with tape testing. The tape test can be sent to a laboratory where it is analyzed for what type of mold spores are present on the surface and at what levels.
