Here are some common areas to look for mold in your home. Mold can be lurking anywhere in your home but the most common areas are where there are lots of water and/or humidity.
Basement or Cellar: These are normally damp areas of the home so you need to inspect on a regular basis for leaks in the foundation or sump pump failure. It’s also important to keep humidity levels below 50% to help prevent mold growth.
Attic: Make sure your attic is properly ventilated, roof leaks are repaired immediately and there is not humid air from the bathroom or kitchen being vented to the attic. Another common culprit is having too little or too much insulation. If you aren’t sure hire an insulation contractor to see if you need to add or remove insulation.
Air Conditioners/HVAC units: Make sure drip trays are emptied out on a regular basis or your unit’s drain hose is properly draining into the drain area and not onto the sheetrock or carpeting.
It's also important to keep up proper maintenance to your home including your roof, landscaping and guttering (to direct water away from your foundation), HVAC, and more.
A little prevention will go a long way in minimizing mold growth in your home.
